DIASPORA SUMMIT 2025

Diaspora Summit 2025

The Diaspora Summit 2025 is a global platform convened by the Government of Ghana to advance a united call for reparative justice, healing, and the restoration of dignity for Africans and people of African descent worldwide.

Rooted in the understanding that the legacies of slavery, colonialism, racial violence, and systemic dispossession continue to shape contemporary economic and social conditions, the Summit engages Heads of State, thought leaders, scholars, activists, cultural institutions, and diaspora communities in charting a future grounded in justice and historical truth.

The first day of the Summit focuses on the quest for reparations, drawing on the African Union's commitment to collective action, Afro-Caribbean solidarity, and the moral imperative to repair the profound harm caused by centuries of exploitation and erasure. It seeks not only acknowledgment and redress, but also reconciliation, psychological healing, cultural revitalization, and the restoration of African agency in shaping our global destiny.

Building on this foundation, the second day of the Summit explores the transformative vision of recognizing the diaspora as Ghana's '17th Region'—a formal extension of the nation's social, economic, and cultural architecture. With millions of Ghanaians and people of African descent living across the world and contributing significantly to development through knowledge exchange, investment, innovation, creative industries, and community leadership, the Summit seeks to strengthen sustainable, structured, and mutually beneficial partnerships.

    • Be on an official hospital or clinic letterhead;
    • Be signed and dated by a Medical Doctor; and

  • Cholera: Ghana has been responding to a nationwide cholera outbreak that escalated through late 2024 and 2025, with hardest hit regions including Greater Accra. Exercise strict food and water safety precautions.
  • Dengue: Dengue outbreak was declared on July 14, 2024 and remains an ongoing risk. Protect against day-biting Aedes mosquitoes.
  • Mpox: Ghana has continued reporting new Mpox cases especially this year, 2025. Transmission is via close physical contact.

In view of the ongoing cholera response:

  • Drink sealed bottled water or water you have boiled or treated tap water; avoid ice unless made with treated water;
  • Eat food cooked hot; avoid raw/undercooked food, particularly seafood; peel fruit yourself; skip roadside salads; and
  • Report to nearest health facility as soon as symptoms of Diarrhoea, Nausea, Vomiting, Abdominal pain, etc. start.
  • All travellers should use chemoprophylaxis (e.g., atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline, or mefloquine (Your clinician will choose based on your health profile). Combine with mosquito avoidance measures below.

Mosquito-avoidance tips (also protect against dengue):

  • Bring a sufficient supply of personal medications (in original packaging) and a copy of prescriptions;
  • Pack medications in your carry-on luggage and pack a travel health kit, especially if you will be travelling away from major city centres;
